BYU enters 2026 with legitimate College Football Playoff aspirations, and the roster has plenty of strengths. But which position groups are the best?
Here is my ranking from strongest to weakest.
1. Running Back — A
LJ Martin gives BYU one of the best running backs in the Big 12 after an outstanding 2025 season. With Martin leading the way, and Sione Moa back in the mix, BYU should have a strong rushing attack.
Biggest question: Can the depth behind Martin consistently produce?
2. Linebacker — A-
Cade Uluave leads an experienced and athletic group that also includes Isaiah Glasker and Siale Esera. This should be one of the strengths of BYU's defense.
Biggest question: Can the group stay healthy?
3. Tight End — A-
Walker Lyons and Roger Saleapaga give BYU two talented options in the passing game. Their ability to block and catch could be especially important with a new-look receiver group.
Biggest question: How much will BYU feature its tight ends?
4. Quarterback — A-
Bear Bachmeier enters his second season as the starter and has a chance to take a major step forward. His arm talent and mobility give BYU a potential difference-maker at the most important position on the field.
Biggest question: How big of a sophomore leap will Bear make?
5. Offensive Line — B+
Bruce Mitchell anchors an experienced group that should give BYU a solid foundation up front. If the Cougars find consistency at the remaining spots, this could be one of the Big 12's better lines.
Biggest question: Can BYU find the right combination across the line?
6. Defensive End / Edge — B+
BYU has plenty of young talent and upside here, including Tausili Akana and Hunter Clegg. If the younger players take a step forward, this group could become a major strength.
Biggest question: Can the group turn its potential into consistent production?
7. Safety — B+
Faletau Satuala and Raider Damuni give BYU experience at the back end of the defense.
Biggest question: Is there enough depth behind the starters?
8. Defensive Tackle — B
Keanu Tanuvasa, Justin Kirkland and Anisi Purcell give BYU experienced bodies in the middle. The Cougars will need them to stop the run and create more interior pressure.
Biggest question: Can they create enough interior pressure?
9. Cornerback — B
Evan Johnson returns as one of the 10 best cornerbacks in college football. Therrian Alexander III adds even more talent to the room. Depth will be the biggest concern.
Biggest question: Who becomes the reliable third corner?
10. Wide Receiver — B-
This is the biggest question mark on offense. Jojo Phillips and Kyler Kasper have the talent to become major contributors, while Tei Nacua and several younger players will compete for bigger roles.

11. Specialists — B-
BYU has to replace kicker Will Ferrin, making special teams one of the biggest unknowns entering the season.

Bottom Line
BYU's biggest strengths are running back, linebacker, tight end and quarterback.
The biggest and most important question is wide receiver.
If the receivers develop quickly and Bear Bachmeier takes the expected sophomore leap, BYU could have a roster capable of competing for the Big 12 and a College Football Playoff spot.
