The Will Stein era of Kentucky football is finally here. After not having a whiff of a bowl game since 2023, BBN gets its first look at a new era Saturday afternoon when the Wildcats welcome Youngstown State to Kroger Field.
Are there questions surrounding this Kentucky team? Sure — but there’s also a legitimate sense of excitement. Stein was brought to Lexington to modernize the offense, and Saturday will be the first chance to see whether Kentucky actually looks like the team its offseason hype suggests it can become.
Eyes will be on the new QB1, Kenny Minchey, who takes over the offense after transferring from Notre Dame. Around him, Kentucky has added some potential fun pieces, including running back CJ Baxter and wide receiver Nic Anderson. The Wildcats don't need to reinvent football against Youngstown State, but they do need to show signs of life. Explosive plays, tempo and a more aggressive offensive style of play would go a long way toward convincing fans that this isn't simply a new coach with the same old problems.
Of course, the Penguins didn't travel to Lexington just to be some Week 1 punching bag. Youngstown State enters the matchup after an impressive 43-10 Week 0 victory and has one of the most accomplished FCS quarterbacks in the country in Beau Brungard. Kentucky should have a significant talent advantage, but the defense will need to stay disciplined against Brungard's ability to make plays with both his arm and his legs.
At the end of the day, Saturday is about how Kentucky wins. BBN wants to see an offense that looks different, a team that plays with confidence and, perhaps most importantly, a program that finally feels like it's moving in the right direction. With Alabama looming next week, Kentucky has 60 minutes to give its fans something they haven't had enough of lately: a reason to be excited about the future of UK football.
