August 19th, 2026.
Just when Iowa State fans thought it couldn't get any worse, it did. In the afternoon hours of August the 19th we find out star Iowa State point guard Killyan Toure sustained a severe shoulder injury while attending the Damien Lillard pro camp over the weekend. Toure's injury marks yet another devastating blow to a starting player for the ISU basketball team, following the past injuries of George Niang in 2014, Keshon Gilbert and Curtis Jones in 2024, and Joshua Jefferson in 2025. The question of "Will we ever catch a break?" relays once again through Ames, IA.
It is said Toure injured his shoulder while attempting a dunk. Head coach TJ Otzelberger nor members of the basketball team have yet to address the matter but are expected to sometime in the coming week.
So, what does this mean for Iowa State's 2026 season? Losing your starting point guard is never a good thing, no matter how good your other positions are. But losing your starting point guard amidst having to replace 3 other starters sounds alarms. In 2025, Toure made a meaningful impact on the team, despite mid-season shooting droughts, his violent and aggressive defense acted as a fail-safe, keeping Iowa State in many games. The true freshman averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists, while shooting just over 46%. It was clear Toure would excel to new levels in his coming years as a Cyclone.
Along with Toure, Otzelberger brought in transfer guards Jaquan Johnson from Bradley, and Ryan Prather Jr. from Robbert Morris. While both transfer pickups were a success, it'll take time, reps, and learning for them to reach full playing potential under Otzelerger... and losing the most experienced guard out of the pack doesn't help. Without Toure for a large portion of the season, Johnson, Prather, and Batemon will be forced to step up and play bigger roles, and more minutes. There is however, one exception... Tamin Lipsey. Lipsey graduated in 2025, but with a recent Colorado judge ruling all NCAA athletes from the class of 2022, eligible for another season, Lipsey could return for a 5th season at Iowa State. While this is unlikely, due to his NBA startup with the Indiana Pacers, if coach Otz and co. play their cards right, we could see the return of an Ames legend.
If push comes to shove, Otzelberger will ultimately be forced to find another transfer guard to add missing depth to the roster, given the open spot. The timeline for Toure's return remains uncertain, speculation ranges from a month to the entire 2026 season. Expect more to come in the following week.
