From 16 Points Down to the Top 25: Mississippi State Is Building Something
There are plenty of ways Mississippi State could have responded after falling into a 16-0 hole against South Carolina on Saturday.
The Bulldogs could have folded.
They could have let an early deficit on the road against an SEC opponent turn into a very long night.
With Sandstorm blaring and the stadium pulse at 100, the Dawgs had every reason to feel the pressure.
But they didn’t fold.
Instead, they regained their composure and did what good teams do.
They responded.
Mississippi State erased the 16-point deficit and walked out of Columbia with a 41-34 victory, opening SEC play with a statement win on the road. Kamario Taylor threw for 251 yards and four touchdowns, and the Bulldogs continued to find answers as the game went on.
And now, Mississippi State is ranked.
For the first time since 2022, the Bulldogs are back in the AP Top 25, coming in at No. 24.
That alone is significant.
But the ranking isn’t what makes this team interesting.
It’s how Mississippi State got here.
The Bulldogs Have Shown They Can Win Away From Home
Mississippi State opened the season with a dominant win over ULM before traveling to Minnesota and picking up another statement victory.
Then came South Carolina.
A road SEC opener. A very hostile environment. An opposing team also looking to prove something this year. An early 16-0 deficit.
And Mississippi State didn’t panic.
The Bulldogs scored 14 points in the second quarter, added 17 more in the third and took control of the game. South Carolina made things interesting late, but the Dawgs had already done enough to put themselves in position to leave with the win.
That response is the important part of this story.
A 3-0 record can tell you a team is undefeated. It doesn’t always tell you how that team handled pressure, adversity or a game that started going sideways.
Mississippi State has already faced all three.
The Bulldogs have won games in different ways, and they have shown they can adjust when the original plan stops working. That kind of resilience is more meaningful than the record alone—and it’s something this program hasn’t consistently been able to say in recent years.
Now the Bulldogs Are Getting National Attention
The AP ranking is a byproduct of what happened Saturday.
Mississippi State is 3-0. The Bulldogs have won an SEC game on the road. They have an offense capable of putting points on the board in a hurry.
Receivers that would make Roadrunner blush.
A QB who went back into the fray and came out a victor.
And now voters have officially put them back into the national conversation.
But being ranked isn’t the destination.
It’s the next test.
Because waiting on the other side is No. 20 Missouri.
Missouri Brings Another Opportunity
Missouri will come to Davis Wade Stadium Saturday with an undefeated record of its own. The Tigers are also 3-0, setting up a matchup between two ranked SEC teams in Starkville.
There is also a little history here.
The last time Missouri came to Starkville, the Tigers beat Mississippi State 39-20 in 2024. Late in that game, Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz was caught on camera appearing to tell Mississippi State players, “Shut the f*** up or I’m gonna score.” Missouri ultimately did not score on the possession.
That was a very different Mississippi State team.This one enters Saturday 3-0 and ranked No. 24 in the country.
Missouri is No. 20.
And for Mississippi State, this is another chance to prove the South Carolina comeback was more than a one-night stand.
The Bulldogs have already shown they can absorb a punch and keep coming. Next Saturday will give Zach Arnett’s defense another opportunity to hold the line and Jeff Lebby’s offense another opportunity to stay aggressive. As Coach Lebby says, score from far.
And for Eli Drinkwitz, that could mean no mercy.
Mississippi State Is Building Something
Nobody knows where this season is going yet.
There are still plenty of games left, and the schedule is about to get significantly more difficult.

But three weeks into the season, it’s becoming harder to dismiss what Mississippi State has done.
Brick by brick, Jeff Lebby and the Dawgs are building something dangerous.
And it’s becoming clear that these Dawgs can hunt.
The Bulldogs are undefeated, ranked, road-tested and SEC battle hardened.
More importantly, they have shown the kind of resilience that can change the direction of a season. They went into Columbia, fell behind 16-0 and left with a 41-34 victory.
Now No. 20 Missouri is coming to Starkville.
That is the next measure of this team.
