Known SEC hater Danny Kanell dropped a bonkers list Sunday.
Pictured below, you can see Danny has Auburn ranked as number 8 on his list of “Who
has been the best on the field. Against the best.” Above the likes of Ohio
State, Alabama, Texas, and Georgia. Having been someone who thoroughly watched
Auburn and Baylor, let me assure you neither one of these teams have been the
best on the field nor have they played the best. Makes you wonder if Danny even
watches these games or if he just reads box scores and spews room temperature
takes.
Baylor and Auburn Recap: The Good, Bad, and Ugly
Let’s start with he Good. Auburn made a goal line stand on a
two-point conversation to hang on to a one-point victory. Incredible play by
the defender to smother the Baylor tight end after he caught the ball on the
one and not allow him to advance an inch.
Now that that’s over, on to the bad and ugly, which was
pretty much everything else. I get the feeling that Dave Aranda will be
coaching for his job before the season is over. DJ Lagway was supposed to be
the engine in that offense that makes it go and instead he looked like he had a
flat tire. Lagway suffered a sprained ankle but managed to finish the game. He
also was responsible for an absolutely pedestrian interception and a buffoonish
fumble. I was thoroughly unimpressed. Baylor looks to be a middling in an
underwhelming Big 12. I think they could still reach a bowl, but it would not
surprise me if Aranda got the Gundy treatment.
I was so high on Golesh. I watched Byrum Brown play several
games last year including live against Memphis. I am so disappointed with the
product I saw on the field. Golesh is running a cheap imitation of Tennessee’s Veer
and Shoot, but Brown does not seem to have the decision-making ability to succeed
at the Power 4 level. We are one game in, so I don’t want to overreact, but it
looks like Golesh is in over his head. I hope he turns it around, but looking
ahead at that schedule it could be another brutal year for the Tigers on the
plains, who have not had a winning season this decade.
I know the point Danny was trying to make. He doesn’t like
Power 4 Teams playing cupcakes. You cannot in good conscience tell me that Auburn
or Baylor looked like a serious football team on Saturday.

Not Take It.
Speaking of Danny Kanell, his alma mater played late on Sunday
due to a power outage at the stadium. Seriously, I do not want to hear any whispers
of Florida State joining the SEC, or even leaving the ACC, when they cannot pay
the power bill on time.
There was a point in this game where I thought Norvell was
going to do it again and win a marquee game in week one. Unfortunately, they
could not capitalize. 0 for their first 10 on 3rd down conversions
probably contributed to that. It feels
like this is the last Week 1 Norvell will coach in Tallahassee, but who knows. Hard
to afford a buyout when you can’t keep the lights on.
On the flip side, SMU was a team who was supposed to compete
for the ACC championship game. Their QB is being marketed for a Heisman
campaign and has a building named after him on campus (true story). And they
could not stop turning the ball over. There were several points where they
could have and should have run away with this game. To be a great team you have
to slam the door, and you cannot give second chances. The world is still their
oyster, but I am softening on the ponies to make a return to the College
Football Playoffs until further notice.
